Benesh Movement Notation for Ballet (BMN for Ballet)
This flexible distance learning course can be studied by anyone looking for an introduction to Benesh Movement Notation. It is particularly suitable for RAD teachers who want to be able to read the notation in RAD’s published syllabus books. The course is delivered by Benesh International and you can start at any point in the year.
Programme Structure
The programme is arranged into four units reflecting the structure of a ballet class. You are normally expected to complete each unit within 8-12 weeks. Each unit is worth 16 hours of RAD Time-Valued CPD.
Among other things, you will discover how the notation conveys important information about the precise paths of movement, head and body positions, floor plans and rhythmic nuances.
A variety of self-assessments, reading and writing tasks will help to consolidate your understanding of the notation system. Completion of a worksheet at the end of each unit provides the opportunity to gain valuable feedback from your course tutor.
Aim and learning outcomes of the programme
To give knowledge and understanding of the use of BMN in the context of classical ballet enabling you to:
- use BMN in your study and teaching ballet
- read the notated exercises in RAD’s published syllabus books
- read standard ballet vocabulary notated in BMN
- make clear, concise and accurate notes about ballet movements using BMN, and
- use a BMN score in you study and teaching of ballet repertoire
