Tutor

Sarah Platt PGDT (Dance) BPhil (Hons) RAD RTS FIDTA RAD Dip; Dance Ex Dip; Anat Dip.

Sarah has been teaching for over 25 years and is Principal of her own dance school. An interest in more diverse teaching started with research into ‘Inclusive Dance Practice’ at postgraduate level, and developed through participation with the RAD Dance for Lifelong Wellbeing (DFLW) project in 2012. Practice-based research into the benefits and considerations when teaching adults and older learners to dance has interested her ever since.

Following the DFLW project, Sarah explored, delivered, and evaluated ballet lessons for older learners, contributing to working parties looking into RAD provision for adults. From these beginnings came the creation of the RAD Silver Swans® ballet programme; formally launched in 2017. She is regularly involved in tutoring, mentoring and contributing to reports and conferences in order to share best practice and spread her passion for the teaching of dance to older learners. Sarah also trains teachers from a range of settings such as primary school teachers and classical ballet specialists.

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the RAD@home programme saw Sarah deliver virtual Silver Swans sessions, providing a wider audience with an insight into learning ballet. The feedback has been hugely encouraging and confirmed the need for more teachers for this age group.

Who can attend?

  • RAD Registered Teachers
  • Ballet teachers

Participation in Silver Swans Workshops is open to ballet teachers wishing to find out more about approaches to teaching ballet to older learners, with a view of becoming a Silver Swans Licensee. On completion of the workshop, RAD Registered Teachers will be automatically granted the Silver Swans licence. All other teachers who currently teach ballet, and who wish to be considered for the Silver Swans licence, will be asked to indicate their interest for the license upon registration for the workshops. Confirmation of eligibility for a licence will be based on the observations of the Silver Swans tutor delivering the sessions. The tutor will observe the participant’s secure demonstration of ballet teaching, as detailed in the list of competencies. Teachers that have indicated their interest and are deemed eligible for the licence will be notified within 30 days following the workshop.
