Focus on Class Awards CPD Webinar
This webinar focuses on the Class Award format, with the aim to provide RAD teachers with guidance regarding how to prepare and present their students for this type of assessment. By looking at what a Class Award is, what work is presented, and how marks are awarded, teachers will also gain a better understanding of when a Class Award might be an appropriate option for their students. A question and answer session will complete the webinar.
Aim
The aim of this webinar is to improve knowledge and understanding of the Class Awards assessment format with a particular focus on the assessment mode, content, marking criteria and general guidance regarding the role of the teacher when delivering a Class Award.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this webinar, you will:
- have an increased understanding of the Class Award assessment format, content and marking criteria, and
- have an increased understanding regarding the role of the teacher in delivering a Class Award.
Platform
You will access the webinar via Zoom. You will receive further information within five working days prior to the live broadcast. The presentation from the webinar will be recorded and it will be available for three months following the date of the live broadcast. You need to book a webinar before the date and time of the live broadcast to guarantee you will have access to the recording.
Recommended Preparation
It is recommended that participants have a basic understanding of the RAD Pre-Primary in Dance – Grade 5 syllabi.

Tutor
René Callis ARAD RAD RTS
René’s classical ballet training started with the late Helena Wagner in Pretoria South Africa at the age of 8 years. Her teachers included Lorna Haupt (former artistic director of PACT), Gillian Joubert, Jean Beckley, the late Maisie Lauden-Carter (Vocational Examiner), and the late Reina Berman (Vocational Graded examiner). Having passed her Elementary Teachers Examination with Honours in 1985, René studied in London and in 1990 became an Examiner for the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD). She is one of two examiners in South Africa who may examine the final exam, Solo Seal of the Royal Academy of Dance. She then went on to obtain her Advanced Teachers Diploma in 1991/2 which included Child Psychology, Anatomy, History of Ballet and Music. In 2007 she enrolled in a Pilates Comprehensive Instructor’s Course doing the Body Arts and Science International (BASI) method. She qualified herself as a certified teacher for Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT). She runs a Teachers Training Course in her home town of Pretoria and Johannesburg. She is a Tutor for the Faculty of Education’s Certificate in Dance Teaching (Ballet) programme – Module 411 (Learning to Learn).
René travels extensively locally and abroad as an RAD examiner and she is now a freelance teacher presenting courses, congresses, workshops and summer/winter schools. She has been invited to judge various competitions, festivals and eisteddfods.
